Vitroflora acquires Dutch young plant producer Gebr. Alkemade


On 27 January 2020, the Polish company Vitroflora Grupa Producentów purchased 100% of the shares of Gebroeders Th. en W. Alkemade, B.V, a Dutch perennial young plants producer.


Vitroflora, a Polish company established in 1977, is one of the largest producers of ornamental plant cuttings on the domestic market and a supplier of perennial young plants to the European Union, Eastern European and Asian markets. The perennial young plants offer includes mainly the latest licensed varieties propagated in vitro, as well as basic assortment and young plants of grasses. Production is carried out in Poland and on the farm in Portugal.

The President of Vitroflora Grupa Producentów, Tomasz Michalik, points out: "The purchase of shares of Gebr. Alkemade is a logical and natural step in our development, leading to the strengthening of our offer addressed to all customers interested in perennial young plants. Gebr. Alkemade is one of the best known and appreciated perennial rooted cuttings producers in Europe dedicated to the traditional and landscape market. Thanks to the persistent and efficient work of brothers Wil and Theo Alkemade together with the Gebr. Alkemade team, the company has achieved a strong and stable position. The combination of both activities will allow to achieve many synergies and further develop the offer of both companies, guaranteeing their customers access to the largest assortment of perennials and a network of specialised sales representatives throughout Europe."

In 2020 both companies will continue to operate as before under their own brands and with their own assortment. The brothers Theo and Wil Alkemade will continue to manage the company they have established. Tomasz Michalik, Theo and Wil Alkemade emphasise: "Both companies are committed to supplying the market with high quality perennial young plants for ornamental plant producers. We believe that in the future our combined offer of starting material will be the most interesting on the market, guaranteeing our customers comprehensive production solutions based on rooted cuttings and a range of perennials from tissue cultures".
